Ocean rules for every family day

  • Check current conditions and choose a lifeguarded beach when possible.
  • Watch the water for at least several minutes before deciding where to enter.
  • Keep non-swimmers and young children within arm’s reach—flotation devices do not replace supervision.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean; shorebreak and currents can change quickly.
  • Stay off wet rocks, ledges and blowholes, and obey every warning sign or closure.
  • Use mineral sun protection, rash guards, hats and frequent water breaks.

One major excursion

Pick Haleakalā or the Road to Hāna—not both. Pack meals, layers and offline directions, limit stops and protect sleep on either side.

Use the full kitchen for breakfast and packed lunches. Groceries, cafés and a food-truck area are close by, which makes early meals and different preferences easier.
