Warm coast, many microclimates
West Maui stays warm throughout the year, but Maui’s mountains, trade winds and rain shadows create striking differences over short distances. These Lahaina-area climate normals are a useful guide for the leeward coast—not a promise for a particular day at Maui Sands.
Summer brings the warmest coastal air and the lowest average rainfall in leeward West Maui. Trade winds often provide relief, while south swells can raise surf on southern shores.

Winter nights are a little cooler and rain chances increase. North and west swells can produce powerful surf, while humpback whales return to Hawaiian waters.

Hawaiian waters are inviting year-round. Regional offshore averages bottom out near 77°F in March and reach about 82°F in September and October.

Maui’s weather can vary considerably over short distances. The leeward West Maui coast is generally warm and relatively dry, while windward slopes receive much more rain and high elevations can be cold at any time of year.
